I hereby propose...

...that the term for someone who uses Arc be an "Arcist." I like the congruence with "artist."

If not that, then something. I think this is one of the most important issues that a young language must address.

I think people who really get stuck into Arc should be called ArcTicks.

But seriously: I read "arcist" with a "ss" sound instead of a "k" sound for the "c", and it sounded rude. Mind you, that's with an Australian accent.

Rummaging through /usr/share/dict/words: the Arc Forum can be the Arcade, and its regular posters Arcadians, with perhaps the top poster (in quality, not quantity) given the title Archimedes; backwards compatibility issues are archaisms; PG is the Archangel, or perhaps the Architect (Lisp is the red pill!); Arc programmers in general are Archaeologists; the growing collection of Arc websites form the Archipelago; type safety is discussed in a forum called the Archetype; old posts go into the Archive... The potential is endless!

I like 'arcanist'.

Then I can call my scripts 'lesser arcana'

And I hereby propose that all the Arc haters be called Narcs.

Well if Arc Hackers are called Arcists, shouldn't Arc Haters be called Anarchists?

Or narcissist

Not "Archer"? Mad cool resonance there: minimal, accurate, fast, and Arc is short for arch. QED?

-----

2 points by nex3 6177 days ago | link

I like it. The only problem is that the phonetic "arc" isn't there, but that's not necessarily a requirement.

Archetyper? Archetypist? Arconaut? Great, now I'll be up all night. :)

I like Architect... let PG be the Archangel.

Wait, how about "cracker"? Resonates with hacker, one speaks of cracking code (secret codes, anyway), and it goes great with Graham.

-----

Unfortunately, "cracker" already has the meaning of "one who breaks into other people's computer systems or software." We've had to fight hard enough to retain the real, positive meaning of "hacker" (and haven't entirely succeeded); "cracker" is a lost cause.

How about "programmer"? If you guys were to spend as much time creating products as you do on stupid questions like this, you might have a term sheet from Yahoo or Google in front of you.

-----

2 points by kennytilton 6176 days ago | link

Yer no fun. :) How about "geeks": we actually enjoy this stuff! And lemme tell you something, for twelve years I have been <ugh> a Lisper -- do not leave this to chance! :)

no no... it's more important to get a good logo for the language, i hereby propose an eightball... or a stormtrooper!

Shouldn't it be an arch? but, missing some element that was of course unnecessary to begin with.

Barring that, a lintel with a big cancel sign over it.
